Makeup and Asperger Syndrome?
I know that most girls spend a lot of time and money on makeup, and from the kind of age where they really starting to get into it, I’ve been aware of it as well – even though I wasn’t as bothered as they were, especially in the early days. I definitely didn’t make a big effort with my appearance when I was starting high school – I showered daily and brushed my hair when I got up and that was about it. It wasn’t until I noticed that the other girls had started doing things, that I realised it was probably time for me to do it as well, so I was always last – with things like using perfume and shaving etc..
The makeup came a lot later for me – and it was well timed with changing schools, as I really wanted to fit it, and wearing makeup was just one of those things I figured I needed to do to fit it. Gosh, I even wore enough to get told off by the teachers and made to take it off. But, I admit, I did become dependent on it to be able to feel comfortable around other people – so, basically, when I’m out around people who will most likely recognise me. I also just enjoy putting it on – when I’m not in any hurry, because it takes me a very long time to get it right as I don’t have a steady hand (when I am in a hurry I will likely end up in a panic because I can’t get it right or do it fast enough – it has been the root of many a anxiety attacks). I think it’s just an extension of my creativity though – like, the thing I mostly bother with is my eye makeup.
I also bother with it because I have quite bad skin, and I’ve found that when I put my foundation on, my skin is a lot better in general, whereas when I miss a few days, I start to dry out in some patches and get overly greasy in others. It’s just a part of my skin care routine. I’ve always had to be very careful with makeup and any beauty products that will touch my skin because I’ve got such sensitive skin and I’ve suffered from eczema on and off my whole life. I always buy foundations for dry skin, and I find it really helps – but I do have to buy quite expensive products for them not to irritate me (but that goes for everything toiletries wise, not just makeup).
So anyway, I think I started playing around using makeup when I was around 13 or 14 and then properly using it daily from around 15. Back then I was kind of a Goth, so my eye makeup was very heavy and was part of my ‘image’ – I can’t be bothering with all of that effort now though, and usually stick to a fairly natural look. Basically, I just like to make my skin as even as possible and cover up any blemishes and spots, and then I’ll throw on some mascara and lip balm.
My daily routine is as follows; I wash my face with either tea tree oil if I’m in the shower, or a deep cleansing lotion for sensitive skin and I have this facial brush thingy to get rid of any dead skin or whatever which I use daily (it makes my face nice and smooth). Then I use a face cream for very dry skin, which is from the Body Shop – I’ve been using it for a few months now and I’m very impressed with it. If I’m not going out at all that day, then that’s it, but if I am, I’ll do my makeup which goes something like this: primer, concealer, foundation, face powder (just a matt finish to help set the makeup) and blusher – which I sometimes leave it at, just so I don’t look ill (I get sick of people telling me I look ill whenever I’ve not bothered with makeup), but then I would mostly go on to use some eye shadow and eyeliner (lately I’ve been doing black liner with wings and just some brown shadow on the outer part of the lid, leaving the inner part with just nude shadow and then some white underneath my brow), I also fill in my brows a brow and liner kit and the use some black mascara. Finally, if I can be bothered I use some pale, almost nude lip butter but usually I would just use lip balm. At the end of the day I will remove all of it with some face wipes and then use my face cream again before bed.
I can’t image going to sleep with all of that lot on my face. I do find that if I’m having a particularly bad day, or my senses are heightened due to an overload if I’m in a crowded place, I will start to notice my makeup and it can become itchy and whatnot if I over think it, but normally it’s fine. It’s all about what you’re comfortable with – for me, I’m aware that makeup is on my face, but I’m more comfortable with it than I am without it if I am out. I feel like not wearing it would somehow draw more attention to me. Obviously if you wear a lot of makeup and are very creative with it, then people will look and maybe even comment on it, so personally, I find there’s a line to be drawn to get just the right amount of attention (none)!
I don’t know if women with Aspergers wear makeup less than normal women or not, I couldn’t say. I wear it so I blend in and feel a bit more confident when I’m out, because otherwise it’s just one more thing to be panicking about, which I don’t need! When it comes down to it, it can’t hurt to just play around a little and watch some online tutorials to get a bit better at it (I do!), if you want to – and if not, then that’s fine too.
