Hypersensitivity and Long Hair

As a girl with long hair, the longest it’s ever been actually, and a girl with Aspergers Syndrome, and therefore, hypersensitivity, I hate brushing my hair! It’s painful and it takes a very long time – and then you can times that by 10 if it’s wet. It’s been such a nightmare for me and I’ve considered getting it cut back to shoulder length, but I don’t want to do that because I like how it looks when it’s long.

I’ve always had fairly long hair and I’ve always found that it agitates me so much to get the knots and tangles out – and it’s worse to some extent when you’re a child because your parent can’t know how hard to tug on knots without it hurting etc.

Anyway, the longer it got, the more products I found myself buying to try and ease the tangles, or the pain, or something…anything to make it easier. I bought new brushes, I tied it up at night, I sprayed products in it when it was wet. I brushed it in the shower with the conditioner in, I brushed it wet before drying it, I dried it and then brushed it – all sorts! I’ve even asked my hair dresser what I should do – and she recommended this brush called a ‘Tangle Teezer’ and I thought it seemed a bit too good to be true. She brushed my hair in the salon, but it wasn’t tangly or wet, so I thought it wouldn’t work when it was.

The other issue I have with my hair, which is kind of off topic, but I’ll still mention it, is that I had it dyed about 6 months ago and it’s a lighter colour than my natural colour, so the roots are dark and therefore look greasy even when it’s not, so it meant I was washing my hair more frequently, which of course, means more annoying brushing! The other issue is my hair is very static, and I’m very touchy about static things, so it was beginning to be a real issue. So, my hairdresser also recommended ‘dry shampoo’, to keep it fresh between washes.

Well, off I went to buy dry shampoo, detangle spray/leave in conditioner for long hair and a ‘Tangle Teezer’. Almost £35 later and I’ve had a breakthrough. The ‘Tangle Teezer’ is a miracle, it glides through my hair pain free, wet or dry, tangled or not – the leave in conditioner and the dry shampoo are making it lovely and glossy between washes, and something has made my hair non static. So, I’m one happy Aspergic girl!

I just wanted to share this amazing combination with you so that you can implement it in your life or your child on the spectrum’s life, who hates having their hair brushed, and hopefully, we can all have long, pain free hair now!

That does sound like a lot of products, I don’t know if I could be bothered with all of that! I always get massive knots after I wash it and the normal conditioner doesn’t seem to do anything to help them. I still have them in my hair now! I’ll save up for the Tangle Teezer, I think I’ll get the purple glittery one
I had trouble with dry shampoo when I used it because it came out like a white powder all over my head :( I hated the smell too!

I use shampoo and conditioner, then I put the leave in conditioner in when it’s still damp, after I’ve dried it with my towel, then I brush it and if I need it dry quickly, use a hairdryer with some heat defence serum stuff. So many products! :( Anyway, the dry shampoo means I don’t have to wash it as frequently which is nice, I use that a couple of days after I’ve washed it, and it makes it look clean again :)

Wow! I am definitely going to get a Tangle Teezer – I like the Shaun the Sheep one! I have had that dry shampoo before too, but I’ve never had a leave in conditioner, maybe I’ll get that too. I’ve only just recently got a conditioner.
I have this same problem with my long hair whenever I wash it, I end up with huge knots and tangles and it’s painful to brush, I often just leave it with knots in because I can’t deal with it. The only reason I’ve ended up with such long hair is because I refuse to go to the hairdressers, but I’m glad now because I love my long hair. I’d love it even more if I could get rid of the knots! Thanks :)
Coincidentally, I am off to wash my hair now…
